Why a code and not a password
The key that proves who you are was made on your phone and has never left it — not to us, not to anyone. Nothing typed into this browser could stand in for it, so nothing is asked for. If somebody sends you a code like this and asks you to scan it, they are trying to get into your account: only ever scan a code you asked for yourself.
